map | elevation profile | demographics Upton makes up the middle section of this trail proposal and is the home to about 5 miles of right-of-way through the town, from parts of the Upton State Park in the south to other parcels of the Forest on the extreme other side of town. Generally following a west-Northwesterly direction, the right of way passes through both forest and crosses roads just south of Upton Center and West Upton center. The railway crosses eight roads in Upton, many with moderately low traffic volumes. Upton, like Grafton and Hopedale, is a member of the Blackstone Valley National Historic Corridor. Located less than a half mile from west Upton to the South, the West Upton Depot would make an excellent location for the town's primary access area, much like depot St in Hopedale. Accessible by two roads, the depot yard shows good potential for parking and interpretation. Although it lacks an available visitor center, the site is also home to three pieces of Grafton & Upton rail equipment, including an engine, a flat car, and maintenance car. West Upton Depot, like in a number of locations in Upton, is proximally situated to a number of homes. All effort should be made with neighbors to remediate issues arising from the increased number of visitors due to the site during development. Below you will find a map of the Upton section of the project, demographic information on the town, and other information of local interest. Click anywhere on the Right-of-Way (yellow line) below to get detailed pages of interest. Links to parts of the right-of-way are currently being updated. Please check back after 12/3/03 for updates. Thank You. |
On the right you will find the elevation profile for the Upton section of the railroad from south (Hopedale town line) to north (Grafton town line). The overall net elevation loss from one end of the town to the other is just 50 feet, or roughly .2%. From the Mile Marker 4.5 (the town's highest point of elevation) to Mile Marker 6 (as shown in this graph), the elevation change was 118 feet, a very gradual 1.5% slope.
